The Less Fortunate of the North Star State

I have continued reading and Barbara has moved on to Minnesota.  Here she has done the same things as before and found a job and a place to live.  She found a job at a Wal-Mart, but the real problem in Minnesota was the state of housing.

She ended up not finding an affordable place to live and ended up living out of a motel.  She paid 50 dollars a day for a room in a motel that clearly didn't supply the living conditions that are ideal for anybody.

"In 1991 there were forty-seven affordable rental units available to every one hundred low-income families, while by 1997 there were only thirty-six such units to every one hundred families."(140)

This has become a big problem in today's low-income society.  My family has never had to worry about rent prices, but it is a very real problem.  She wasn't able to find a single affordable place to live in the whole of the twin cities.  This is amazing to me  because I didn't even think of it as that kind of a city with lower income families.  I sincerely feel bad for the people who are affected by this housing crisis and hope that I will never be in that situation.

Also, another problem that she faced was the unfair treatment of workers by the corporate world.  She and other workers wouldn't get paid for overtime work which is actually illegal.  I believe that the government isn't strict enough on the corporate world.  They are just fine sitting there and letting corporate greed ruin this country.  They are getting away with too much and it will continue until the government actually crack's down on these types of things.  I feel that this is an issue that must be addressed and must be acted on.

Overall, this was a really good book.  It changed my view on the low-income workers dramatically.  I hope to one day be able to help that class of people pull themselves up to a higher income and better life.  This book will change you views on this topic and I suggest it to anybody who cares or wants to know more about this topic.

  1. Good Job! I like how you were able to retell all of the important information but didn't go overboard with it.
