The Need For Power (A Superior Group)

Today I have finished Animal Farm by George Orwell.  I think that it speaks volumes about humanity and human nature.  I believe that George Orwell tried to uncover the habit that human beings have of seeking power and improving their lives.  To some extent this may be viewed as a positive thing, but it can't be overdone.  Overdoing it leads to abuse of power as many go against the beliefs that led them to power to retain power and improve their lives.  Orwell spun an enticing tale about human nature and how with too much power, individuals will abuse their power over others to prosper and better their own lives.
Humans have abused power for hundreds of years.  There was always a leader in civilization.  When Animal Farm first started, they threw the humans out and there wasn't supposed to be a superior race anymore.  This didn't happen though as the pigs took power and took control of the other animals through a series of lies.  They ended up doing no work and the other animals doing all of the work as if they were slaves.  I think that Orwell was trying to say that this is the characteristics of this world and that people in power will always want more.  The perfect leader would be one who only thought of the people that they served and not personal gain.  Sadly this is impossible because we are greedy creatures.
I think that this can be related to the world today because greed and abuse of power has fingerprints all throughout the political world.  People will always strive for personal gain.  Many politicians have friends in industries and corporations that influence their decisions.  To me this is corruption and until it is changed, I think Orwell was right.

  1. Nice job. I think that it is very true that humans place a huge emphasis on power and work to obtain it.

  2. Your post reminds me of what we were talking about in Social Studies class and imperialism. Despotic leaders such as Napoleon in Animal Farm wish to extend their power and influence (even by force if they think they have too) which is basically what the idea of imperialism is about. And while it is natural and can productive to aspire to greater and better things, there must be a limit on humanity's thirst for power and control.
