Fight Club Conflict

I am reading the book Fight Club and very early I am feeling a conflict from the main character.  The conflict is the main character's insomnia which is a sickness that causes you to have a hard time falling asleep.  He comes right out and tellsusthis inthe beginning of the book and tells us that his doctor wouldn't precribe any medecine.  His doctor just told him to go to support groups so thathe can see people in real pain.

The main character tries to deal wih his external conflict of insomnia in a couple of ways.  The first is going to these support groups which was suggested by his doctor.  He finds that when he goes to these support groups he is able to sleep better.  He finds that in hearing others story of pain, he is able to escape his sleepless nights.  Another way of dealing wih his conflict was creating fight club.  By attending fight club he was able to relieve his emotional stress and be able to sleep at night.  He finds that this helps him and uses it.

I think that in both ways in which he tries to deal with his insomnia, he is going about it thewrong way.  In the caseof the support group, he is lying to everyone in the support group which is just wrong.  What makes it even worse is the fact that he did it for TWO YEARS!  In the case of fight club, this is also the wrong way to go about it.  There are better ways of relieving stress than fighting with people.  I understand that people try to solve their conflicts and thats good but he just goes about it the wrong way in my opinion.

  1. I think that it is interesting that you disagreed with the ways that the main character was going about solving his external conflict.
