Extra Credit Reflection to World on Fire

I think that world on fire was an extremely deep, thought-provoking, and moving video.  It deals with very important social issues.  It deals with the issue of poverty (obviously), but I also think that it deals with the issue that people don't pay attention to the rest of the world.

I believe that many people in this world just worry about themselves.  They see poverty to a certain level everyday in life, but they are afraid to talk about the bigger  more important social issues that this video goes into.  The public and news media is always talking about the homeless people in big city and all of the people living in poverty, but I think this is very unfair.  I think that they look at people in different parts of the world unequally.  In the United States poverty is struggling to get food on the table.  This and being homeless.  Yet, in Africa, by that definition, almost everyone is living in poverty.  It makes me very angry that the poverty I these less powerful countries get less media attention.  Its as if it is somewhere far away so we don't have to worry about it.  People should feel privileged that education is a right in the United States because in many parts of Africa, education is non-existent.

I read this book called Blood River about the Congo.  It is about how the Congo is corrupt and is basically hell.  In this book it said that in the Congo that civilization has decreased in the past 40 years instead of increasing and that grand-parents had a better chance of having seen a car in their life-time than the kids.  I feel that this is really sad.

I think that it also ties into the current "Occupy Wall Street" protests.  These protests are based on the how the rich 1% gets all the help from the government while the other 99% get screwed.  I think that it is great that people are finally taking a stand against the government.

  1. I completely agree with what you are saying. I got the same thing out of the video and it is a big issue and it is great that at least some people are taking a step and trying to change the world. but there is lots to be done, and the video, and you response shows that.
